Plastic Recycling Codes by Mark
Plastics are used for an array of different products; this in turn creates tons of plastic waste produced each year. Plastic constitutes almost half of the recyclable solid waste that is generated. Plastic waste dumped in landfills may take more than 700 years to decompose. The plastic waste dumped in the sea disrupts the sea life and kills approximately 1,000,000 sea creatures each year. Recycling plastic is becoming a very important step in solid waste disposal. Plastic recycling involves the conversion of plastic waste into a new form of usable plastic. At times the new product may be completely different from the old form. For example plastic bottles can be melted and cast into plastic furniture. This recycled form of plastic generally cannot be further recycled in the future. Hence recyclable plastics exist in two forms which are: Original form and recycled form.
The most commonly used plastics are classified into seven main categories. This classification is based on their properties and the ease with which they can be recycled.
Type 1 Plastics – PET or PETE (Polyethylene Terephthalate)Â Â Â Â
Examples:Â Soft drink bottles, Food grade containers and containers for non-food items. All easily recycled.
Recycled Form: Carpet yarns, fibre fills, furniture, panelling, and new plastic containers.
Type 2 Plastics – HDPE (High Density Polyethylene)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Examples: Milk bottles, juice bottles, detergent and household cleaner bottles; shampoo bottles; some garbage bags, shopping bags etc. These can be easily recycled.
Recycled Form: Household chemical bottles, Bins, Tiles, drainage pipes, furniture.Â
Type 3 Plastics – PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)Â Â
Examples: Household chemical bottles, wire jacketing, medical equipment, Blood bags, windows, pipes and fittings; etc. It is rarely recycled as the recycling cost is very high.
Recycled Form: Packaging, mud flaps, roadway gutters, floor tiles, cables, speed bumps, garden hose
Type 4 Plastics – LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Examples: Flexible bottles, shopping bags, tote bags, carpet; etc. Rarely recycled.
Recycled Form: Garbage liners, shipping envelopes, panelling, lumber, floor tile.
Type 5 Plastics – PP (Polypropylene)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Examples: Syrup bottles, hot-fill liquids bottles, straws, Microwaveable meal trays, automotive parts; etc. Commonly recycled.
Recycled Form: Battery cables, brooms, brushes, Shipping containers and pallets, ice scrapers, Garden rakes, landscape borders, signal lights
Type 6 Plastics – PS (Polystyrene)Â
Examples: Disposable plates and cups, egg cartons, carry-out containers, protective packaging, such as CD covers or cases; etc. It is difficult to recycle.
Recycled form: Insulation, switchboards, egg cartons, foam packing, carry-out containers
Type 7 Plastics – Other
Examples: Large water containers, Melamine, sunglasses, computer cases, signs and displays, Oven baking bags; etc. It is not commonly recycled however some companies have now started recycling it.
Recycled Form:
It is extremely important to recycle plastic whenever possible. We can make our contribution towards a greener environment by limiting the use of plastics and judiciously using those plastic forms which can be easily recycled. Use of type 1 and 2 plastic should be encouraged and type 3 and 7 should be limited.
